You create a diverse range of music using innovative methods. Could you share your philosophy when it comes to sound?
For me, music transcends the mere act of creating sound; it is a continuous inquiry into how those vibrations affect people. What changes does a particular sound bring to myself, to the listener, and to the surrounding environment? I have dedicated my time to music production and the study of sound with the hope that its “waves” might create even a slightly more harmonious flow in the world.
you provide the music for nehan. Could you tell us a bit more about that?
I compose the music used during nehan’s workshops. I believe that music plays a vital role in the nehan experience. Having participated many times myself, I’ve directly felt how even the most subtle differences in sound can lead to a vastly different experience.
For this reason, my process involves both dynamic composition and delicate design, paying close attention to the sounds that influence brainwaves and to the deeper “wave” that lies beyond the sound itself. I have meticulously crafted every detail to ensure that participants can immerse themselves in the work without any disruption.
How did you become involved with nehan?
In the process of creating music for yoga and meditation—music designed to harmonize the mind and body and to open one’s consciousness—I have had many experiences of entering altered states of consciousness through sound. The power of sound and words is greater than we can imagine; at times, it can even change the course of a person’s life.
Feeling that the original, unobstructed “wave” exists not in the city but in nature, I relocated to Yatsugatake. There, I reconnected with the land of Kobuchizawa, and later, with Yoshi (Founder of nehan) and Rie (Coordinator). We found that we shared a common vision, and in a very natural flow, I came to be in charge of the music for nehan’s programs.
What is the source of your motivation? What brings you joy?
When I think about what joy is, I believe it is born in the moment you feel from the heart that you are never truly alone. I feel that a great joy overflows from within when I deeply sense my connection to the people around me, to nature, and to the cosmos.
The fact that I am alive and existing here, right now. The fact that I have a physical body and can experience the world through my senses. These facts, which can seem so ordinary, are in truth a priceless gift. This body has been passed down to me from distant ancestors over countless years. And to be able to walk alongside kindred spirits, whom I have met in this vast universe, sharing a common purpose.
The “now” exists upon the accumulation of these countless small happenings. I believe that when we remember this in the depths of our hearts, we can touch true joy.
